This is an archive of the articles we did when we were living in Moncton and had a cottage in Cocagne. Cocagne was our base for travelling throughout Acadie.

Anything like higher education for young Acadians — namely, high school — meant leaving home, leaving your family and friends, impoverishing your family twice, once by the tuition and board and once by your not being there to help fish or farm.

So, I had expected wonderful weather this time and wasn’t disappointed. It was indeed sunny. But times have changed. Something hangs over Cape Tormentine now that wasn’t there on any of those other trips.

Cape Tormentine once bustled with the excitement of being the ferry terminal to Prince Edward Island. Now, one must find beauty in the rusting water tower..

Miscoun Island. Even on a cloudy day everything is luminous: rocks, old lobster traps, scrubby trees, sea birds and, of course, the surf. When we’re there, a shift takes place.

Jeannette Despres once had a house perched right above the shore, face onto the sea, just down the road from our cottage in Cormierville. On a blustery day the surf would splash the front of it.

Florina Beach, Cocagne Island, Carmel
Just before we set out for a beach excursion, it starts to sprinkle, so we decide not to go anywhere, but to stay home at Florina Beach. It’s our beach. It deserves some attention.
